Museo del Mare – Androne Palazzo Del Trono

Anchor stock made of lead, with an inscription in Greek “EPME” on the right fluke.

(Recovery from the seabed in front of Belvedere Marittimo-Diamante)

length: 1.96 m

weight: 6 q approx.

The anchor is certainly attributable to a large cargo (transport) ship , as confirmed also by the dedication to Hermes, the god of the Greek-roman pantheon (Mercury for the Romans), messenger of all the gods and protector of both merchants and orators. The stock can be dated, on an epigraphic basis, presumably in the late Hellenistic age.
